Course: Keeping an Eye on Equity: Improving Care of Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy in Rural and Underserved Areas

Eye health and vision problems such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are a significant concern among rural populations. Patients who reside in these areas tend to be older, sicker, and are less likely to have insurance coverage for eye care services. These barriers, coupled with issues such as long travel distances to care, decrease their likelihood of receiving screening for retinal disease, which is necessary for early treatment and good patient outcomes. In this activity, expert faculty will review current guideline recommendations for retinal disease screening and the latest advances in treatment for DR and AMD. Ways to overcome barriers and improve care access in rural and underserved communities will also be discussed.
