Course: Supporting Individuals With HIV: Addressing Common Treatment Barriers and Expanding Access to Resources
CME Credits: 0.25
Released: 2025-09-30
After an HIV diagnosis, primary care clinicians are essential in providing support and guiding patients as they begin treatment. In rural and underserved communities, addressing barriers and offering practical solutions is critical to sustaining engagement in care. This activity, part of a three-part series titled Optimizing HIV Care Conversations in Rural and Underserved Communities: A Whole-Person Approach to Treatment, uses a mock clinic encounter to demonstrate how to review laboratory test results, explain the significance of U=U, and reinforce the importance of adherence to therapy. Expert faculty will also explore strategies to address mental health and substance use concerns and connect patients with counseling, peer educators, and community-based resources. Flexible options for follow-up, such as telehealth, will be discussed to promote access and continuity of care for patients living with HIV. After completing this activity, select participants will have the exciting opportunity to reinforce what they learned and further strengthen their HIV care communication skills by interacting with an AI-generated synthetic patient (access details and instructions to be provided via email). The content for this enduring activity was recorded on August 22, 2025.
