Course: Overcoming Barriers to Meningococcal Vaccination in Rural and Underserved Communities: Raising Awareness Among Primary Care Clinicians

CME Credits: 0.00

Released: 2026-02-27

Invasive meningococcal disease is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening infection, and vaccination remains the most effective means of prevention. Despite the availability of safe, effective vaccines, meningococcal vaccination rates in the United States remain suboptimal—particularly in rural and underserved areas. Barriers in these communities include limited vaccine access, misinformation, logistical challenges, lower health literacy among patients and caregivers, unfamiliarity with the vaccine, and safety concerns. Inconsistent recommendations across patient populations and limited discussion about meningococcal vaccination during routine primary care visits further contribute to underutilization. In this CME/CE activity, expert faculty will review risk factors for invasive meningococcal disease, available vaccines, and current guidelines for their use. The program will also highlight evidence-based, patient-centered strategies to improve vaccine uptake in rural and underserved settings, including the use of shared decision-making. This enduring activity is a recorded session from Rural Health Clinical Congress Fall 2025 that took place on November 15, 2025.
