Course: Neuromuscular Emergencies: Recognizing & Treating GBS

CME Credits: 1.00

Released: 2026-08-24

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and related acute neuromuscular emergencies can look deceptively mild at presentation while nerve injury is already accelerating—making early recognition and decisive escalation the highest-leverage actions a clinician can take. In this Crossfire series, a panel of neurology and emergency medicine experts works through patient cases to sharpen pattern recognition, clarify when to escalate, and confront the biologic cost of diagnostic delay. Three short videos focus on the red-flag features—ascending symmetric weakness, areflexia, cranial nerve and autonomic involvement, and progression over time—that distinguish a neuromuscular emergency and drive time-critical decisions on monitoring and escalation. The 30-min case-based module turns to confirming GBS at the bedside, differentiating it from common mimics, and weighing the efficacy, safety, and timing of standard-of-care IVIg and plasma exchange alongside an emerging complement-targeted treatment landscape. Through case-based discussion, faculty equip frontline and specialty clinicians to act sooner and manage rapidly progressive disease with greater confidence. Session Titles
